INFO ABOUT THE UNITED ARTS COUNCIL

The United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro (UAC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to champion the arts for everyone in our community. Established in 1960, the UAC strives to be a voice for local artists, arts organizations and teachers through support and leadership. The UAC believes art is a part of every day life and should be accessible to everyone.

Each year, the UAC raises approximately $1.5 million through the annual campaign, the United Arts Fund (UAF). Support comes from individuals, small businesses, corporations, foundations and government. The UAC reinvests these funds through grants and services to schools, artists and arts organizations. The UAC provides leadership and critical funding to ensure that high quality, diverse arts are available.

In addition to fundraising, the UAC provides vital services with an emphasis on arts in education, arts in economic development and arts in health and well-being. The UAC works to weave art into the fabric of our community and into every day life. We value what the arts provide and foster their presence. Join us. Become an arts champion!

Arts in Education
The arts are vital to education. The UAC supports arts in education in many ways:

  • through our funded affiliates who work with and in our local public and private school system
  • through awards of $20,000+ annually to teachers and schools via Teacher Art Grants, impacting thousands of K-12 students
  • through the Teacher Resource Guide, which is produced in cooperation with City Arts
  • and by partnering with Americans for the Arts and other local, regional and state groups to strengthen arts in education.

Arts in Economic Development
Did you know that the nonprofit arts industry generates over $30 million in Greensboro alone?* And the arts generate over $723 million for our state economy.** The arts mean business in North Carolina. Your UAC partners with our Chamber of Commerce, the Piedmont Triad Partnership and others to ensure that the arts are at the table and recognized as an economic driver.

Arts in Health and Well-Being
The arts help us reach beyond ourselves, reminding us of beauty, sadness, strength, truth and possibilities. The arts are the soul of a community, helping us express ourselves and creating a sense of place. The UAC partners with groups like the Moses Cone Health System and the NC Arts for Health to promote the importance of arts in health and well-being.
